Let's Do a "Million Drag March"!

Writer: Sarah Heartsong, MSSSarah Heartsong, MSS

Dancing in Drag for Human Rights. Worldwide. Let's make it happen.

In these turbulent times, when human rights are under siege by tyrannical regimes and oppressive forces worldwide, we must find creative and powerful ways to stand in solidarity with those targeted and marginalized. From the trans community facing escalating threats to immigrants seeking refuge, from women fighting for bodily autonomy to all those resisting the rise of fascism, the struggle for justice is fundamentally a struggle for our shared humanity.

These are not isolated issues; they are interconnected threads in the fabric of human rights. As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations, affirms, these fundamental rights are inherent to all individuals, regardless of background or identity. Yet, these very principles are being challenged by leaders like Trump and his allies, as well as authoritarian governments across the globe.

Our trans siblings face a particularly acute crisis. Their basic human rights, their very existence, and their identities are under threat. Elon Musk's actions, approved by Trump, including scrubbing files and documents containing affirming language about trans identities, represent a dangerous form of discrimination working to reestablish the caste system putting white men on top. This, coupled with the ever-present risk of violence, creates a climate of fear and vulnerability.

For many trans individuals, drag performance offers not only a creative outlet and a means of self-expression, but also a way to build community and earn a living. It is a vibrant and powerful art form that deserves celebration, not condemnation. Drag is open to people of all genders, sexes, racial ethnicities and celebrates the beauty of diversity. It is an art form we can mine for a powerful tool of resistance as well.

History offers us inspiring examples of resistance. During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, when the Jewish population was ordered to wear the Star of David, legend has it that the Danish Crown Prince donned the star himself, inspiring the rest of the nation to do the same. This act of solidarity, whether factual or symbolic, demonstrated the power of collective action against oppression.

In that spirit, I propose a powerful act of solidarity: let us take to the streets, not just in protest, but in celebration of diversity and human rights, dressed in drag.

I urge everyone to embrace the transformative power of drag – to dress up, express your true self, and be as flamboyant and joyful as possible. As RuPaul has famously said, drag is a creative act that challenges gender stereotypes through exaggerated performance.

It’s a way to break free from societal norms, to celebrate individuality, and to stand in solidarity with those whose very existence is a form of resistance. Let the streets come alive with the vibrant colors and boundless energy of drag, especially on weekends.

Let us transform public spaces into stages for protest, celebration, and the unwavering defense of human rights for all. Let us dance in drag for trans rights, for immigrant rights, for bodily autonomy, for the fight against fascism, for women’s suffrage, and for the fundamental truth that human rights are universal and indivisible!

Let's have fun and lift our spirits while we say, NO! and "F" U to Fascism!

Gather your "We The People"! Do pop-up resistance "Parties" wherever you can.

This resistance will not be organized by one organization. It will be organic and sustainable by being unpredictable and spontaneously by many everywhere.

So, my pretties, go get in your best drag and hit the streets! Dance on democracy-loving, freedom-loving, fighting folks! ...and also be prepared, like any good Gurrrl Scout!

Dance in drag wherever you are. Let us transform public spaces into stages for protest, celebration, and the unwavering defense of human rights for all.
